Come on Up, The Weather is Great!

weather

What comes to mind when you think of the weather in British Columbia, Canada? Snow, ice, rain? Perhaps no real seasonal changes, but a continual grey, bleak winter that never ends? Nothing could be farther from the truth!

Four Seasons

British Columbia actually experiences all four seasons. Spring, summer, fall and winter are all represented, and for more than a couple of days each!

Winter

Winter lows are typically in the mid to high 30’s Fahrenheit with highs from the mid 40’s to the low 50’s. Winters are generally wet at lower elevations with snow common at the higher elevations.

Spring and Fall

Spring and fall temperatures are mild and comfortable. Low’s in the 40’s and highs in the 60’s make for perfect outdoor adventuring weather. Spring and fall are generally much drier than the winter months, so it’s the perfect time for hiking or a picnic in the park.

Summer

The summer months in Burnaby are just about perfect. Days are warm without being too hot, and nights are comfortable with just a slight chill in the air. Temperatures range from the mid to high 70’s and the low to mid 50’s with rainfall totals that average around 3 inches per month.

What to do with All the Perfect Weather?

So here you are in Burnaby: now what? The perfect weather opens up opportunities for all sorts of fabulous outdoor activities, and the community is geared towards this type of lifestyle.

Cycling

There are two major cycling routs that run though the city of Burnaby, and many streets have bicycle lanes. Urban trails are dedicated, paved greenways that are used by cyclists, joggers, skaters and walkers. Cycling is encouraged as a commute method to and from work or classes. In the spring and fall, cyclists need to be prepared for rain from time to time.  A lightweight jacket and cycling pants are usually enough to keep you dry and comfortable even on the wet days. Bicycle helmets and headlamps after dark are required by law and are a great idea for safety regardless.

Central Park of Burnaby

If cycling is not your thing, then check out Central Park of Burnaby. There are several outdoor activities offered in the park’s 86-hectare landscape so that anyone can find something that interests him or her. Swimming, golf, tennis and an outdoor fitness course are just some of the amenities available for you to enjoy in this beautiful setting. If your tastes run to the more “traditional” outdoor pursuits, there are horseshoe pitches and lawn bowling greens available as well.

The Perfect Place for an Active Lifestyle

Put aside any visions you may have had about the great frozen North. Burnaby, British Columbia boasts mild winters and comfortable summers that practically beg you to get outside and enjoy yourself. The city is designed for those that want to bike, jog, skate and generally make the most of its many amenities.
